Relationship Series – Valentine’s Day: Make it Your Kind of Special

Written By: Gabriella Mahan, BA

February. The month of Valentine’s Day. The month of love. Cuffing season for some, and a reminder of being single for others. In the past couple of weeks, I have heard some pretty distinct perspectives on Valentine’s Day. Some have said, “Honestly, it’s overrated and it’s just an excuse to treat your significant other to a nice dinner.” Others have said, “It’s a day I get to shower my significant other with love and express to them how lucky I feel to have them in my life.” Many have said, “It isn’t that big of a deal…but I enjoy it. I get the allure of having an evening dedicated to spending time with your significant other.”

Make It Your Own

Whether you’re in a relationship or single this Valentine’s Day, you shouldn’t let it stop you from celebrating the relationships you cherish. For those in a relationship, whether it’s staying in and ordering takeout while watching your favorite Netflix series, or going out to a nice restaurant and ordering the most expensive item on the menu, make sure you tell your significant other just how much they mean to you.

Maybe you have a crush you’ve been pining over for months but you haven’t quite found the right words to say or mustered up the courage to tell them how you feel. Life is beautiful and way too short to miss out on an opportunity that could potentially have a positive impact on your life. Embrace this Valentine’s Day and use it as your ticket to getting one step closer to that cute crush of yours!

I can tell you what I’m doing this Valentine’s Day… I will be spending it with my 11-year-old sister. Lame? Not at all! My parents deserve a night out! Juggling five kids and full-time jobs can make it pretty difficult to squeeze in some alone time. So, I have taken it upon myself to free them of all parental duties for the night and will be looking after my little sister. There definitely isn’t much “looking after” involved. She’s easily pleased and is always down for anything!

She is one of the most loving and kind-hearted individuals I know—can we take a second to appreciate the fact that this is my 11-year-old sister we are talking about here… Anyways, back to my Friday night plans… My little sister and I are going to cook a delicious dinner—that girl loves baking, and if chocolate is involved, forget it! Let’s just say, my tummy will be very happy Friday night—, watch a good old comedy on Netflix, and per her request, build a fort in her room to fall asleep in together.

So, you’re saying I get to act like a kid and be free of all responsibilities for a night? Count. Me. In. I don’t know about you, but it’s pretty rare that a 24-year-old gets to build a fort with her little sister on a Friday night. I’ll do just about anything to put a smile on this kiddo’s face!

Make It What You Want to Make It

Grab a loved one, a close friend, a crush, or maybe even someone you’ve been yearning for more quality time with, and plan something special that both of you will enjoy. So yeah, I don’t have a significant other to share this holiday with, but last time I checked, there isn’t a rulebook on how you’re supposed to spend your Valentine’s Day…and if there were…well, I am pretty sure I checked off the main one: spend it with someone special.
